The LocalTalk Personal Network is the cable and connectors made by Apple for AppleTalk Network Systems. LocalTalk can be installed for less than $100 per connection, compared to the $700 or more required to connect a computer to similar networks. A LocalTalk network can have as few as two devices, such as a Macintosh and a LaserWriter, or as many as 32 devices.
The cable consists of shielded, twisted-pair wire that transmits data at the rate of 230.4 kilobits-per-second. This is much faster than the 1.2 (1200 baud) or 2.4 (2400 baud) kilobits-per-second achieved by modems over ordinary voice-grade telephone lines.
